A great day trip from Chicago is exploring Oak Park, a charming suburb just 10 miles west of downtown (take the Green Line). With 25 Wright buildings in the neighborhood surrounding Frank Lloyd Wright's Home and Studio, Oak Park is an outdoor museum of architectural history. Take a guided tour of Wright's unusual complex that served as his private residence and studio from 1889 to 1909 - the first 20 years of his career. Wright used his home as an architectural laboratory, trying out design concepts before sharing them with clients. Here, he raised six children with his first wife, Catherine Tobin, and designed such famous buildings as the Robie House, Larkin Building and Unity Temple. Pick up an audio walking tour of the neighborhood at Wright's Home. You can also tour the inside of Unity Temple.
