Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands

All images by Mark File. Please do not copy without permission.

(2006) Nestled in the calm, turquoise waters of the western Caribbean, the Cayman Islands is just 480 miles south of Miami. I journeyed to Grand Cayman, the largest of the three islands. The big town on the island is George Town and the popular beach strip is Seven Mile Beach. I stayed on the quiet south central coast in Grand Cayman Sunrise Villa condo.

You can relax, swim and snorkel. Or you can explore the 22-mile long island with plenty to do and see. Since we stayed the middle of the island, we could drive to the very busy George Town and Seven Mile Beach and return to the "authentic" Cayman village of Bodden Town. If you visit, drive the perimeter of the east side of the island. My favorite stop was the blow hole that gave a constant water show. Other highlights on the island include Stingray Bay, outstanding snorkeling and diving, great restaurants (The Lighthouse was the best) and a very small village called Hell. I enjoyed my first trip to Hell (many folks have told me over the years that I was going). I said hello to the devil and mailed a postcard.

Quite a few residents put on amazing light shows in December.

The Devil was nicer than I had imagined.
